For 27 years, Chuckie Johnson has dedicated his life to public safety, serving the residents of Washington County and surrounding communities through both law enforcement and fire/rescue service.

With 19 years of law enforcement experience, Chuckie has built his career on leadership, accountability, and real-world public safety experience. His background spans patrol operations, criminal investigations, violent crime enforcement, training, labor leadership, and emergency incident command.

Chuckie currently serves with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office as the agency’s Lead Instructor, where he oversees training, firearms programs, policy development, and professional readiness for nearly 200 employees. In this role, he has modernized the agency’s Field Training Officer program, replacing outdated methods with a modern, objective-based system designed to better prepare deputies for today’s policing challenges. He also serves as the agency’s Range Master and armorer, helping ensure officers are properly trained and equipped to serve safely and effectively.

Before joining Frederick County, Chuckie served with the Hagerstown Police Department, where he worked in patrol, field training, proactive enforcement, narcotics investigations, and violent crime operations. During a period of increased gun violence, he served on the Violent Crimes Task Force, working directly to address serious crime in the community. He also helped lead operational initiatives, including coordinating the rapid deployment of new patrol vehicles while staying within budget.

Chuckie began his law enforcement career with the Smithsburg Police Department, where he helped build investigative capabilities by conducting the department’s first controlled drug buy and authoring its first officer-written search warrant.

His commitment to service extends beyond law enforcement. Chuckie has served with the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company since 1999, rising through the ranks from Lieutenant to Chief. In that time, he has led responses to multi-alarm fires, mass casualty incidents, and complex emergency operations while also overseeing budgets and major equipment purchases.

Chuckie’s leadership experience also includes serving as Vice President of the Fraternal Order of Police, where he worked on contract negotiations, compensation improvements, and organizational reform.

Throughout his career, Chuckie has earned multiple commendations, life-saving awards, unit citations, and two Medals of Valor. He also holds numerous instructor and operational certifications in firearms, use of force, emergency vehicle operations, field training, de-escalation, and officer safety.

But Chuckie’s campaign for Sheriff is not about titles or awards.

It’s about bringing proven leadership, accountability, and forward-thinking solutions to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Chuckie believes public safety leadership should be proactive, transparent, and focused first on protecting the people of Washington County while supporting the deputies and staff who serve this community every day.
